“A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dreamwalkers,” Universal Studios Florida, 2007.

On this date in 1984, the now-classic horror film “A Nightmare on Elm Street” premiered in U.S. theaters.  In the film, a group of teenagers suffer from horrible shared nightmares.  As their pleas for help go unanswered by parents and other adults, the teenagers’ dreams are invaded and they are murdered, one by one, by a sinister bladed-glove-wearing man named Freddy Krueger.

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” was a huge success, and went on to gross over $26 million dollars (imdb) on its $1.8 million budget.  The film became a pop-culture icon of the 1980’s and made a star of ‘Freddy’ actor Robert Englund, who went on to portray the character in 8 sequels and a short-lived television series.  The series was “rebooted” in 2010, with actor Jackie Earle Haley playing the part of Freddy.

The “Elm Street” series has made several appearances at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights events.  In 2007, it was featured in both Orlando (“A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dreamwalkers,” above) and Hollywood (“A Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy’s Nightmare”) events.
