As we write this post, it is 7:00pm in Osaka and tonight is Opening Night for the Halloween Horror Nights event at Universal Studios Japan. That means their gates should have opened a half hour ago. And, with the first HHN event to open somewhere in the world, it’s official: the Halloween Horror Nights 2014 season is here! Let the screaming begin!
We’ll be updating this post with tweets, photos and videos from USJ’s opening night, so if you’re interested in seeing how the scares happen in The Land of the Rising Sun, keep checking this post.

Below, Toshio (from the “Ju-On/The Grudge” film series) haunts the queue line video for USJ’s “Jurassic Park” attraction.
As you can tell, the marketing for Universal Studios Japan’s Halloween Horror Nights 2014 heavily promotes their (apparently extremely large) roaming scareactor horde, the Super Zombies. The official commercial also mentions this year’s new faces, Toshio (from the “Ju-On/The Grudge” film series) and Chucky (from the “Child’s Play” film series).
With Japan’s event opening tomorrow (!), we have our fingers crossed that we’ll get to see more photos and video from this unique event.
“The Grudge” will make its first Halloween Horror Nights appearance in Universal Studios Japan’s upcoming HHN 2014. The popular film series’ creepy little boy character, Toshio, will ‘haunt’ the park’s “Jurassic Park: The Ride” and “Back to the Future” attractions.

Universal Studios Japan’s official Halloween Horror Nights 2014 lineup has been revealed and it’s impressive!
Much like their American counterparts, Japan’s HHN is growing to include more movie-based properties, although they have focused on some of the uniquely Japanese franchises. This year’s event will see the return of Sadako, the vengeful spirit seen in the “Ringu/The Ring” film series. Sadako will “haunt” the park’s ‘Space Fantasy,’ ‘Terminator 2’ and ‘Backdraft’ attractions. Her long, black hair and buried-in-a-well motifs will also be included in some of the dining options at nearby restaurants.
Sadako will be joined by another Japanese horror icon: Toshio Saeki, the creepy little boy from the “Ju-On/The Grudge” movies. Toshio will be found in the ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘Jurassic Park’ attractions.
Not to be outdone, popular American horror mainstays Jason Voorhees (“Friday the 13th”) will return, and pint-sized slasher Chucky will make his Japanese HHN debut in his brand-new haunted attraction, “Chucky’s Horror Factory.”
The majority of the park will be patrolled by “Street Zombies” scareactors, and there may even be some “Super Zombies” and an occasional “Zombi Mob” in there somewhere.
Last year’s “The Dark Restaurant” is returning, and the popular “Biohazard: The Real 2” attraction will also be open during Halloween Horror Nights.
For more information, please visit the official Universal Studios Japan Halloween Horror Nights website. And keep checking The HHN Yearbook for more photography and video of this event once it begins on September 12th.

Universal Studios Japan’s official Twitter page has confirmed the return of “The Dark Restaurant,” a unique dining option that is only available during Halloween Horror Nights.
This experience made its debut in 2013 as “Blind Terror, The Dark Restaurant:“ a pitch-black restaurant run by an undead chef and his recently-deceased wait staff.
We’ll continue updating as more information becomes available.

Universal Studios Japan has made its first announcement about their Halloween Horror Nights 2014 event, and it looks like we’ll be seeing more zombies! The above image was posted to the official Universal Studios Japan Facebook page. While concrete event details are yet to emerge, the image illustrates the daytime/nighttime dichotomy of USJ’s “Universal’s Surprise Halloween” event, which features more family-friendly elements during the daylight hours.
USJ’s Halloween Horror Nights will run from September 12 through November 9th, 2014.

Universal Studios Japan recently announced the return of their survival horror attraction. “Biohazard: The Real 2” will throw guests into an ultra-high difficulty videogame experience, where the survival rate is 0%!
USJ seems to have addressed some of the biggest criticisms from last year’s event: limited ammo, weak weapons and sparse zombie encounters. This year’s attraction equips guests with an unlimited-ammo shotgun and throws them into the midst of an intense zombie attack on Kuhn City.
We’ve Google-translated a few choice paragraphs from the official .pdf announcement below. For the full Japanese text, view the announcement HERE.
