UO Close Up: Behind the Scenes: Becoming A Scareactor

By Michelle Russo. Posted October 20, 2014 at 05:35PM on “UO Close Up,” the official Universal Orlando blog:

[box style=”quote”]Have you ever wondered what actually goes into the incredible scares you get at Halloween Horror Nights? I met up with one of my good friends Brooke Jordan, a stilt walker in the MASKerade: Unstitched scare zone, to get the story.

When did you start scaring?
Halloween Horror Nights was my first entertainment job ever. I started scaring in 2005. It was my first year scaring, and I was in Toon Lagoon. We had a laser ceiling, which was the coolest thing ever.

What made you want to be a scaractor?
A friend of mine said he thought I would be great and that I could really sink my teeth into something like this. Which is a perfect phrase because then I became a zombie! You do this once and you’re going to tell everybody about it.

When did you learn to walk stilts?
I started walking stilts for Mardi Gras, which is great—let the good times roll! It’s more challenging to scare on stilts but people aren’t expecting it because they are assuming you’re the distraction and this year we are given the ability to get in their face and scare them and before you know it… they have a ground performer on them and it’s just scares from all angles!

What are your favorite types of scares?
I have this signature move, it’s like a… to the left, to the right, do a spin hit the ground with some sort of grunt noise. It totally catches people off guard!

What do you consider your favorite scare you’ve ever done?
There was a group of 15 girls and a couple of big tall guys, so everyone was going for the girls and they were all screeching and screaming but no one was going after any of the guys. I got really low and hid in the fog… one guy was talking to his friend and when he turned around, I came up on him, he screamed and fell straight to the ground!
