30 Days of Halloween Horror Nights: What’s Your Favorite Use of Gore in an HHN House/Maze?
I loved the HHN 18 house, “Body Collectors: Collections of the Past” for a number of reasons. The gloomy atmosphere, the return of the Body Collectors characters and the tie-ins with the Jack the Ripper mythos all made for a fun experience.
One of the most memorable scenes in the house involved a classic haunted house effect in a perfect setting. The scene was as follows: a dark, dingy operating theater in early-1900’s London. In attendance were a number of Gentlemen (Body Collectors), peering down from the surrounding seats. In the middle of the room stood a single Gentleman and a lone patient, lying face-down on an examination table. Upon closer inspection, the patient’s bare back is exposed and, in fact, has been completely opened through incisions. As you watch in horror, the Gentleman reaches into the patient’s back, grabs hold of the spinal column and YANKS on it.
The effect is a simple one, but it’s also extremely effective (and memorable). In the above video, former Halloween Horror Nights Show Director J. Michael Roddy explains the effect in question (skip to the 2:31 mark).
